Betting on individual sports games may become legal in Canadian casinos: if it happens, as much as $3 million annual gross betting increase is expected, according to a local member of Parliament Joe Comartin, who’s backing the legalization.
When such a bill is introduced, it would require an amendment to the federal Criminal Code, which prohibits betting on individual games. The proposal would allow betting on individual hockey, baseball, football, basketball, soccer and other games, at casinos and race tracks.
Ontario casinos already have sportsbook infrastructure, but betting is limited to the government-run lottery Pro-Line, where bettors select the outcomes of three or more sport contests (so-called 'parlay' ticket).
Professional sports leagues oppose sportsbook betting in cities with professional teams, which is one of the reasons why Las Vegas does not have any pro sports in town. In Nevada, the only U.S. state where betting is allowed, bettors wager on everything from baseball to golf.
