UK Bingo Industry Suffer from Taxation
About three million of Englishmen are used to have bingo as their pastime, which dates back to nearly a century ago. However, some 100 bingo clubs across Britain have shut their doors during past three years, and more than a dozen starting with this year’s beginning, reported the Guardian. Bingo operators’ profits have been hugely curtailed by political and economic constraints.
The point is that bingo faces double taxation in comparison with other gaming businesses and the gambling profits' levy as well as VAT. Also, under the government's new gambling legislation, bingo halls had to vastly reduce the number of their profitable £500 jackpot machines.
A research has been performed by the Henley Centre research group; it was aimed at depicting effects of the closure of bingo clubs in Scotland and the Midlands. The study was then revealed by the Bingo Association and stressed that the major social effect was discovered among older women whose small local clubs had closed.
