Charged Poker Players Demand Jury Trial
Five American citizens who were charged with participating in home poker games now demand a trial by jury as they are completely enraged by the laws that ban any kind of entertainment using cards or dice.
South Carolina locals were charged under a state law of 1802. The arrest has become the result of a ten-month police investigation. Four houses had been watched and police arrived at a conclusion that high-stakes games were taking place. Twenty seven people were finally arrested, $62,000 confiscated.
Among the defendants there are several distinguished businessmen, a policeman, a Navy officer and a teacher. All in all sixty five people were charged in connection with this case, all of them had to post bond. Nineteen of all have decided to plead guilty to misdemeanours; they now face $154 to $257 fines.
One of the defendants, Bob Chimento stated they were planning to change the law with the help of their state representatives.  He also said that their group was simply a number of ordinary poker players trying to entertain themselves. We just with to be able to legally play poker at home, he added.
Republican Legislator Wallace Scarborough’s last year proposal would have permitted cash poker in homes where no rake was collected. Nevertheless the proposal was sent back to committee last month and is not likely to see action before 2009.
