| Gutshot, popular online poker room operator and owner of Gutshot.com, in 2004 opened a venue to complement its online business. But the British government shut it down and charged Gutshot with operating a land-based poker room without a license.
British court of Appeal announced this week that poker is a game of chance under UK law as it contains a significant element of chance, and therefore is prohibited, and Gutshot will need a license if it wants to offer the game in private clubs. Gutshot defends itself in court by arguing that poker is a game of skill, and therefore cannot be prohibited.
Gutshot has one appeal left—to Britain's Supreme Court, but its chances to win are modest.
